Susan's stairs from the first to second floor suddenly seemed like Mount Everest. Too many. So many. Fifty thousand million many, my muddled brain thought.
"Are you feeling all right? Are you going to be sick?" Susan stopped, peering into my face.
"I'm fine," I said, though the room was spinning a little.
"Just a few more steps to the bathroom. Then we can wash the hospital off of you."
We reached the top of the steps, stumbled down the hallway like some four-footed upright monster, and entered the bathroom. Susan eased me onto the floor, propping me against the wall. It was too bright. So bright. I closed my eyes.
I felt a breeze at my chest. The skin on my shoulders tingled as she pushed my button-down shirt over my arms. Her fingers moved to my waist.
With what little strength I had, I reached through the drugged cloud and clutched her wrist. The bruised muscles in my stomach twinged with the effort. "I can do it."
She gently removed her wrist from my weak clutch and hushed me. "Let me help you."
"The doctor says I'm fine," I slurred. "I can call for you if I need help."
"Let me help you now you stubborn fool." Her smile split her face in half.
I let go. I watched her closely through the haze of my brain, looking for any flicker of heat or attraction. She removed what was left of my jeans. She unclasped my bra. Then took my undies.
I was exposed to her, completely, and yet she never looked. Not even at my face. She worked like a nurseârespectful, efficient, competent. Sterile. Even through the pain, I wanted her fingers to trail over my nipples. I wanted her eyes to linger on my lips. I tingled with the memory of the woods, of the almost more than a kiss. I was here, naked, and Susan didn't want me.
As she slipped her arms under mine to help me to the tub, I tilted my chin and kissed her lips. She froze. Though she didn't jump away, she didn't kiss me back either. I went deeper, pushing deeper, wrapping my arms around her neck, feeling the warmth of attraction flowing through me, easing my pain. Still, she didn't respond.
I pulled away, searching her eyes, but they were on the tub. "Do you find me so repulsive that you can't even look at me?"
Susan let out a little huff of air. It caught in her throat. She was bent over, still, her arms under mine.
"Susan?"
She sniffed. "Why do all these horrible things happen to you?"
"I'm fine. I swear. I didn't even break anything." Not that the pain wasn't enough, but in that moment, I wanted to be strong, to show her I could be okay. That she wouldn't always have to take care of me. I knew I needed to do that, even with the drugs.
"So you keep saying. But it's not fair for you. Why can't you catch a break?"
"Susan, I've caught a break. Look at me. I'm naked with a beautiful woman.
